Position Purpose
Traffic Technician I
Installs, removes maintains signs and pavement markings to ensure
the safe and efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian
traffic.
Traffic Technician II
Designs all traffic signs utilizing a computerized fabrication
system. Installs, removes and maintains signs and pavement markings
to insure the safe and efficient movement of vehicular and
pedestrian traffic.
The City of Arvada promotes Equal Pay for Equal Work. Starting
salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience,
knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity. The
range listed reflects the entire range and typical placement is
entry to mid range. Posting reflects full salary range for Traffic
Technician I.

Essential Functions / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSRequired to be able to assemble, lift, install
or remove all types of traffic road signs and markers using the
necessary equipment to complete these tasks. Gas powered post
driver, hydraulic post puller, hand tools. Makes sure that all
signs throughout the City of Arvada are clear from obstructions,
graffiti, stickers, tree limbs, garage sale signs and are straight.
Assist in sign shop at times to weed sign face material and apply
vinyl sign face material to aluminum blanks when needed. Assists
other crew members with the installation and removal of pavement
markings using various paint equipment and grinders.Maintains a
daily log of detailed information that pertains to signs (location,
sign type, material used and direction).Maintains an updated
numbered tag system of all signs installed or removed.Assists with
the installation of data collection equipment required for
speed/volume studies.Assists with the setup of speed monitoring
devices.Assists with site distance studies..Frequently operates a
personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive to and from work
locations throughout the City.Demonstrates a respectful attitude
towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open
communication, and effective customer service. Acts with the
customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides
effective services or solutions for customers.Exercises appropriate
level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope
of assigned authority.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of and follows
signs designs as per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and designs as per
sign work orders, or verbal instructions. Ability to install and
pick up traffic road tubes (hoses) on all roadways throughout the
City of Arvada.Ability to perform manual traffic counts at times.
With a hand held traffic counter and be able to download
data.Ability to assist or install heat applied thermoplastic
preformed bike, arrows and handicapped symbols with the use of a
propane torch and propane. Ability assist or to do all types of
layout or application work for established parking lots stalls,
railroad crossings, stop bars and crosswalks. On existing roadways,
new overlay, chip seal, or slurry seal roadways. Utilizing paint or
plastic markings. Ability to kneel, bend, stoop and lift. Ability
to set up all pre warning construction signs needed before
installing crosswalks or railroad crossing and assist flagging
traffic on all roadways if needed.Ability to assist in all types of
layout work for road markings, centerlines, bike trails, edge
lines. All layout work requires the ability to walk long distances
on new hot asphalt, chip seal or slurry seal with traffic present
or in construction zones. It requires a person to be able to stoop,
kneel and bend while marking the road with tape, chip seal markers,
or spray paint. Ability to assist in the setup of all road marking
machines, loading machines with latex paint, glass beads, water and
fuel. After machines are loaded with paint it is required to clean
up all paint load hoses.Ability to operate and maintain a gas
powered manually operated parking lot paint striper. Ability to
operate and maintain a gas powered manually operated line
eradicator (line remover).Ability to be certified on and operate a
gas powered forklift for loading and unloading all types of
material.Ability to effectively communicate information, both
verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and
interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive
and cooperative manner.Frequently operates a personal or City-owned
motor vehicle to drive to and from work locations throughout the
City.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:Proficient in exercising initiative and judgment as
well as making decision within the scope of assignment
authority.Must be able to adjust daily schedule to make sure
priority work is done first.Keeps an open communication link
between the citizens of Arvada and fellow employees as well as
other departments throughout the City of Arvada.Good hand and eye
coordination.Physically able to walk long distances, bend, stoop,
kneel and lift.Work in heavy traffic work zones.Knowledge and
ability to flag traffic in work zones.
--Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job-- SCOPE
OF AUTHORITY:Receives general supervision under the direction of
the traffic field operation supervisor and the traffic crew
foreman. Daily priorities are established by crew supervisor.
Expected to evaluate and respond to new situations that require
immediate attention. Guidance in handling irregular situations may
be required.

functions of the job. Work is performed primarily in an outdoor
environment. Requires working in traffic areas with daily exposure
to loud machinery and automobile noises, paint, adhesive fumes and
automobile exhaust. Exposure to all types of weather conditions,
hot, cold, wet, humid and windy conditions results in marked bodily
discomfort. Working with sharp utensils such as razor knife, flat
razor scrapers, aluminum sign blanks, vinyl sign face material.
Working with latex traffic marking paint, simple green cleaning
material, spray adhesive removers, graffiti spray removers,
crosswalk tape, P-50 spray adhesive, thermoplastic heat applied
symbols, propane, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Requires the ability
to lift and move all types of traffic signs assembled on steel sign
poles (8', 10', 11' long), sign faces, rolled vinyl material and
different shape of aluminum sign blank materials. Requires the
ability to work with a manually hand operated tamper cart that
requires operator to hand load 4 each 50 lbs. weights total weight
200 lbs. onto tamper cart to roll in crosswalk material. Requires
the ability to operate daily electric hand operated impact wrench,
socket wrenches, hand held wrenches, screwdrivers, punches,
chisels, band saw, sign banding material and equipment, 12oz./
5lbs./16lbs.sledge hammers. Requires the ability to lift a 57lbs.
gas operated vibrating post driver (Ponjar) to install sign post
bases. This can cause exposure to a shaking object that could cause
a strain on the body or extremities and exposure to constant loud
sounds of pitch or levels sufficient to cause marked distraction or
possible hearing loss. Ear protection is advised. Operation of this
post driver 57lbs. (Ponjar) is done with the assistance of one (1)
other employee, and at times one (1) employee may be required to
lift and operate this same post driver 57lbs. (Ponjar) at times
with no assistance. Ear protection advised. Requires the ability to
operate and maintain a truck mounted hydraulic operated post
puller, and manual post puller. Requires the ability to walk long
distances while doing layout work with a can of spray paint,
plastic chip seal markers, or tape on new overlay asphalt, chip
seal or slurry seal roadways. Requires the ability to stoop, kneel,
reach, climb and lift. Handle bolts, nuts, washers, screws, rivets,
sign brackets, banding material, banding clips. Requires the
ability to stoop, kneel, bend and manually lift 1 boxes of
preformed rolled tape 12"x 25 yds. of material that weigh 44 lbs.
from the floor or a skid onto a table to be cut with a razor knife
into required length. Average boxes cut per day 10- 15 each. Then
physically hand load material onto a trailer with the assistance of
one other employee. Requires the ability to operate a manually hand
operated push tamper cart that has 4 each 50 lbs. weights a total
of 200 lbs. added to tamper cart for rolling in crosswalk
material.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND
EXPERIENCE):High school diploma or GED equivalence with one (1)
year experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic
signs and pavement markings or other closely related field. Valid
Colorado driver's license and acceptable driving record is
required. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age old. Basic
computer skills. Working knowledge of construction practices and
tools. Ability to obtain certification for forklift operator and
IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification, and Flaggers
certification within 1 year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: A commercial driver's license

experience in designing and fabricating traffic signs utilizing a
computerized fabrication system Knowledge and understanding of the
MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices). The ability to
operate the rear/paint gun end of the city paint truck. Must be at
least eighteen (18) years old or older. Basic computer skills.
Working knowledge of construction, traffic control safety, road
layout standards and procedures. Certified for forklift operator,
Flaggers certification, IMSA Level I Work Zone Traffic Control
Safety and IMSA Level I Signs & Marking Technician Certification A
valid Colorado driver's license and acceptable driving record is
required.
Preferred Qualifications: A commercial driver's license
